COMMON PORSCHE REPAIRS

Almost every auto enthusiast has at some point considered what it would be like to drive a Porsche, making it one of the most popular and envied cars in the world. In fact, it’s been an icon of performance for decades. As desirable as it is, however, the Porsche has some repairs that appear to be more common. Should you encounter one of these issues or need other preventive maintenance services or repairs, entrust your prized auto to the certified technicians at Hollard Car Care in San Mateo, California.

TRANSMISSION TROUBLE

Some owners are surprised to find that their Porsche transmission needs routine servicing. Specifically, contrary to some purported rumors, the transmission is not “filled for life” or “unserviceable.” A common problem is grinding when shifting or difficulty getting the car into gear. The culprit is usually a worn synchronizer which might have been prevented with timely service.

ENGINE EXASPERATION

To the relief of many drivers, one common Porsche engine complaint is relatively simple. Although a smoking engine is in most vehicles a sign of impending failure or the need for a major repair, it is often caused by oil overfill in the Boxster or 911. This happens frequently, particularly if someone less familiar with the Porsche performs maintenance. While it’s true that these cars have a large oil capacity, they should be filled at the manufacturer’s recommended temperature and when the auto is sitting level, not filled to excess. The problem could also be a problematic oil separator, particularly on the 986 or 996 models.

On a more serious note, some years and models have a reputation for a bad intermediate shaft bearing (996 or 998 models manufactured between 2000-2005 and 997 models from 2006-2009). This component should be checked and replaced if necessary. Once it fails, it will ruin your engine. Finally, worn timing chain guides or stretched timing chains can be an issue across all models. This needs attention before it causes engine failure, and it must be checked using a special tool.

COOLING CALAMITIES

The Cayenne and Panamera models sometimes present coolant distribution pipes problems. When they don’t reseal, they leak into the engine valley. The Boxster also can have expansion tank issues. If you smell a wet, musty odor or see wet carpet, have us check your Porsche for cooling system leaks.

STEERING AND SUSPENSION SORROWS

On some models the ABS electronic module can fail, causing the ABS light to illuminate. Also, the CV joints must be monitored and maintained to prevent failure because the engine puts a lot of strain on them.

COMMON ISSUES FOR VOLKSWAGEN DRIVERSPerhaps you’ve heard the local TV or radio meteorologist say that a particular day will be mostly sunny with a chance of clouds. That means that the weather is going to be nice, but there may be an occasional lull in your suntan efforts. Volkswagen reliability and performance are really no different.
